Kids of all ages love to create and even young children can learn to use the sewing machine.  These free sewing projects teach basic skills such as pinning, lifting the presser foot and needle, pushing the pedal, guiding fabric under the foot, sewing straight, and following a guide for a straight and even seam allowance.  Some projects teach beginning piecing skills for quilting.  Each project has PDF directions which can be downloaded by clicking on the picture.  Choose an apron, bag, pillow, little quilt, pillow case, pin cushion or sewing machine mat.
